CHAPTER 39

Grace and Roman

Roman Rock had been moved to an interrogation room and was awaiting his next pointless meeting with Ross Souter when Grace entered instead. An officer remained inside the room, stone faced and impassive, gazing ahead into the wall.

“What have we here?” said Roman. “They said someone wanted tae talk tae me. If I’d known it was you, I’d have got them tae bring a wee bottle of champagne.”

“Mr. Rock,” said Grace, cordially. “How are you today?”

Roman didn’t get up but flicked the air with the back of his hand. His shirt sleeves were rolled up and his collar undone, exposing a very hairy chest and bullish neck. “I’m enjoying a brief stay at her majesty’s pleasure. Not that I gie a fuck about that inbred man-cunt.”

“Looks like you may be here a bit longer than you think,” said Grace. “I just passed Philip Robertson QC at reception. He says he’s not representing you this time.”

“Aye, well there’s plenty more where he came from,” said Roman. “Lift up a stone and there they all are, crawling aboot ready to jump the moment you flash some cash.”

“I’d say that was a fairly honest appraisal of your former brief,” said Grace. “Anyway, let’s get started.”

Roman smiled. “You ken how much I like tae help the police with their inquiries...”

“I don’t represent the police,” said Grace. “I’m here on a private matter.”

“Are you noo? And what would that be?”

“I’m looking for someone.”

“Oh aye, and only I can tell you, eh?” Roman beamed. “My brief does a runner and two minutes later you’re in here on a private matter looking for information. Darling, dae I look like I was born yesterday?” Roman leaned forward on his elbows, “You ken, I remember a few times in court, I caught you looking over at me. I kent what you were thinking. Men like me attract women like you. Pure animal magnetism. I’m the king of the jungle. I dae whatever I want in this life. Posh girls like you dream of having a real man like me show you who’s boss. A bit of rough with balls the size of coconuts.”

“Aye, and just as hairy,” said Grace. “Now let’s get down to business, Mr. Rock.”

“Ah,” said Roman, sitting up straighter, “now we’re talking.”

Grace returned Roman’s gaze, considering the best way to illicit the information she needed. The trouble was, beneath Roman’s neanderthal exterior was a sharp mind. He’d risen to the top of the underworld by making strong plays and outsmarting opponents. Any hint she was trying to trick or manipulate him would shut him up like a clam.

“I want you to know this is strictly off the record,” said Grace.

“Is that so? And I suppose that arsehole Ross Souter isnae behind the glass over there with his cock oot?”

Roman and Grace looked at their reflections in the interview room mirror.

“Bastard!” whispered Souter, from behind the glass.

“If he is, or he isn’t, it doesn’t matter,” said Grace. “I’m not here on police business. And I reckon you owe me a favour.
